Speedo brand timeline:
a legacy of innovation
and performance

Speedo’s century long legacy defines innovation, speed and aquatic supremacy in performance swimwear.

1928

1928

Speedo is born on Bondi Beach, Sydney. Alexander McRae designs racing swimwear built for speed — and Swedish legend Arne Borg breaks a world record wearing it in the same year. A brand, and a standard, are born.

1932

1932

Australian swimmer Claire Dennis wins gold at the Los Angeles Olympics in a Speedo suit. By the 1936 Berlin Games, the entire Australian men's swim team is competing in Speedo — the brand has found its home on the world's biggest stage.

1940

1940

Demand surges and Speedo opens a new factory to keep pace. Even as its bikini is banned on Australian beaches, Speedo cements its dominance where it matters most — in the competitive pool.

1956

1956

Speedo expands into Europe and begins exports to the United States. At the Melbourne Olympics, Speedo's sponsorship of the Australian team propels the brand to global recognition — the swimmers claim eight gold medals and the world takes notice.

1968

1968

At the Mexico City Olympics, swimmers from 44 nations compete in Speedo — winning 27 of 29 gold medals and setting 22 of 23 world records. The brand is no longer just Australian. It belongs to the world.

1970

1970

Speedo pioneers nylon-elastane swimwear — a material breakthrough that rewrites what performance in the water looks like. At the Munich Olympics, Speedo-clad athletes break 21 of 22 world records. By Montreal in 1976, 52 of 54 nations are competing in Speedo.

1980

1980

Speedo holds trademarks in 112 countries and becomes the first official sponsor of the Australian Institute of Sport — cementing its place not just as a swimwear brand, but as a pillar of the sport itself.

1990

1990

A decade of fabric innovation — S2000, Endurance, and Aquablade each redefine what performance swimwear can do, dominating Olympic medal counts along the way. Speedo becomes Speedo International Ltd, under Pentland Group, and steps forward as a global sports lifestyle company.

2004

2004

At the Athens Olympics, Michael Phelps makes history — winning 8 medals in Speedo's FASTSKIN suits. The same technology had already accounted for 83% of Sydney's Olympic swimming medals. The FASTSKIN FS-PRO and LZR Racer then break 21 world records in just six months.

2010

2010

Speedo continues to push the boundaries of what swimwear can achieve — introducing the IQ Fit Goggle, the Fastskin LZR Racer X, and the award-winning V-Class goggles. The decade closes with the launch of the Fastskin LZR Intent and Valor, engineered for unmatched speed, fit, and performance.

2011

2011

Speedo arrives in India under Page Industries — bringing the world's leading performance swimwear brand to a market ready to discover it.

2020

2020

Speedo dominates the pool at the Tokyo Olympics, winning 69% of all swimming medals — a performance that cements the brand's place as the undisputed choice of champions.

2024

2024

At the Paris Olympics, Speedo-clad athletes win 52% of all swimming medals — including 46% of individual golds. The same year, Speedo.in is reimagined and relaunched in India, bringing the world's benchmark for performance swimwear closer to Indian swimmers than ever before.
